Beatles Album: A Hard Day’s Night: Track 5
Year: 1964
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.27
Paul McCartney wrote the lyrics to the Beatles and I love her song. Under the influence of the big band sound Paul thought that ballads were an important aspect of the Beatles repertoire. This was the first ballad that Paul McCartney wrote for the Beatles. He initially started out by wanting to write a song in which the title was mid sentence, having completed the verses Paul got John’s help for the writing of the middle eight if and I love her.
There is some grammatical trickery in the lyrics of and I love her, which is perhaps influenced by the writing style of Bob Dylan. Although always writing in the second person, Paul changes the person he is singing to from the general audience to the girl herself eg compare ‘you’d love her too’ to “as long as I have you near me”.
This was the first of the Beatles tracks to feature completely acoustic instruments, with Ringo playing the bongos. Interestingly the American version of and I love her is different than the British one and features George martin’s orchestra.
