Beatles Album: A Hard Day’s Night: Track 7
Year: 1963
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.15
The lyrics to the Beatles can’t buy me love were written during the Beatles stay at the George V hotel in Paris , during their stay her they had a grand piano moved into their room so that they could continue song writing through a gruelling 18 days of concerts at the Olympia theatre. The main reason for this was that the Beatles needed a single as soon as possible following their recent successes both home and abroad, ‘I want to hold your hand’ was currently topping the charts in the united states at the time of the writing of can’t buy me love.
It was George Martin who put forward the idea of starting the song with the chorus ‘can’t buy me love’. Although this song was released as a single three months before the hard day’s night album, it was included on the album as it was in the film.
Can’t buy me love got into the Guinness book of records for the greatest advance copies of a record sold – 3 million.
The singing on the song is done by Paul who is double tracked, and to show how much the Beatles were getting into the new four track technology even the guitar solo was double tracked. The original version of can’t buy me love was recorded without George on guitar, and the Beatles wanted to release this but the producer George Martin refused as the tape included the sound of George Harrison flushing the toilet.
