Beatles Album: Help!: Track 1
Year: 1965
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.16
The Help! song was often described by John Lennon as his favourite Beatles number as it felt real; however he was disappointed that he could not play help the way he had originally intended it. He wanted to play it in a slow style in the manner of Bob Dylan but instead was pressurised to fit it into a more upbeat and fun tune to be in fitting with the film of the same name.
The lyrics of help! were written jointly by Lennon and McCartney in Weybridge. The lyrics again give an insight into John’s mind; at the time he was drinking heavily, had gained weight and could not cope with the pressures of being a world wide celebrity with no where to escape to, and though the song is very poppy the plea for help was all too real.
John does the lead vocals on the help song and is joined on the chorus by George and Paul.
John Lennon: Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar.
Paul McCartney: Backing vocals, Bass guitar.
George Harrison: Backing vocals, Lead Guitar
