Beatles Album: A Hard Day’s Night: Track 3
Year: 1964
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.16
The lyrics to the Beatles if I fell were written by John Lennon. It is a beautiful and somewhat revealing love song. It is a very illicit song as he is asking the girl in the song for assurance that she will be true to him if he leaves his girlfriend (In this case, and knowing what happens in the future, he is most likely talking about leaving his wife Cynthia Lennon). He wants to avoid pain for himself by getting this guarantee from the lover seemingly happy to stay with his wife if he does not get it. He openly admits to being cowardly and having affairs whilst married to Cynthia, he is quoted as saying in 1968 that “I wasn’t going to go off and leave Cynthia and be by myself”.
This song if I fell is therefore semi-autobiographical, a feat he would repeat in the lyrics to in my life. Interestingly the song uses the same chord sequences as if I fell.
The song opens with John being the soul lead, but he is joined by Paul as a duet in the remainder of if I fell.
