Beatles Album: Help: Track 9
Year: 1965
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 1.53
The Beatles It’s only love is one of John Lennon’s songs, he wrote the lyrics to be upbeat in style, and it is very much out of character of his normal self loathing style of song writing. The song describes the feeling of love and how he gets butterflies in his stomach; it’s only love. The song was originally going to be called ‘that’s a nice hat’ and was recorded as so by the George Martin Orchestra.
As with yes it is, of which John was ashamed, it’s only love is a song that John hated “because of the abominable lyrics”. When criticising his own Beatles songs it was always the lyrics that he was unhappy with and not the melodies of the tune. Again it is likely that at the time the Beatles saw this as a throwaway song so that they could get their help album completed. That said the opening line of “I get high” may have been one of the Beatles first lyrics that were drifting towards expanded consciousness.
