This site covers the original British Beatles Albums plus analyses of the lyrics of non-album tracks.
Information on how the Beatles wrote the lyrics to the Rubber Soul album songs can be navigated from below.
The lyrics of the I’m looking through you song reflect Paul’s struggling relationship with Jane Asher.
At the time when I’m looking through you was written Jane had moved to Bristol so as to further her acting career. He could not understand why Jane would put her career ahead of him. He wanted to live a bachelors life, and for Jane to be at his beck and call whenever he needed her. He was very selfish, so when Jane left him, his approach was sod you it’s not my fault it’s yours.
The lyrics in I’m looking through you show how bitter Paul was towards Jane, he sees everything as her fault, that she has changed, and he had done no wrong; he was threatening her that his love for her “would disappear overnight”.
The way Paul sings on I’m looking through you shows how much he was influenced by both Little Richard and Buddy Holly, with strong inspiration coming from both. Te song itself sounds a little bit like a Holly track, while the voice is more Richards in style.
