John Lennon wrote the lyrics to the Beatles in my life song. It is a further development in his response to Kenneth Allsop that he didn’t write enough about the real John. The song was originally a long poem about John’s life where he reminisced about his childhood, his friends and places that were dear to him. The In my life poem contained lots of references to places like penny lane and how they had changed during his lifetime.
John developed the lyrics to in my life further by getting rid of the place names but keeping all the emotions about them, especially with regards to how things seem to change around you. He refers to old friends some of whom had died such as the fifth Beatles Stuart Sutcliffe.
It is thought that Paul McCartney wrote the melody to the whole song, though John disputed that Paul did it all.
