Beatles Album: With the beatles: Track 13
Year: 1963
Lyrics: Lennon and McCartney
Length: 2.03
The Lyrics to the not a second time song were mainly done by John, though musically the song is very much influenced by Paul McCartney who gave the song a Smokey Robinson style. The song is very much in the emotional style of John and talks about being hurt by love and not wanting to take a second chance in this song.
Not a second time was subjected to a critical review in the Times newspaper who compared apart of it to ‘Song of the Earth’ by Gustav Mahler. This review led to many of the future Beatles songs being critically and intellectually analysed for their deeper hidden meanings. John Lennon is quoted as saying about the article that compared their music to Aeolian cadences “I don’t know what the hell it was all about”.
The song itself features a double tracked lead vocal by John and George Martin on piano. John also played acoustic guitar on this track with Ringo on drums; interestingly the other two Beatles were not even present for the recording of the track.
