Beatles Album: Abbey Road : Track 5
Year: 1969
Lyrics: Lennon, McCartney
Length: 2.49
Ringo Starr only wrote two songs by himself for the Beatles, don't pass me on the white album and Octopus's garden on the abbey road album.
The octopus's garden lyrics were inspired by a holiday to Sardinia. Ringo was on a boat trip in which Octopus was served as lunch; Ringo squeamed at the thought of eating it; the captain of the boat then went on to tell him all the good things about octopus's and how they live. He was told that the animals would act a bit like magpies and horde anything shiny, and thus make an Octopus's garden. Ringo loved this idea, and the thought of being under the sea and away from it all.
Interesting though many of the Beatles songs such as Lucy in the sky with diamond were linked to drugs when they were not, Octopus's garden was, but was thought of as being a children's song, despite it describing being far out and away from it all: George Harrison openly described it as being far out.
